Math Department

It is our belief that mathematics aids our students in developingand enhancing the ability to reason and deduce. By applying learned mathematics concepts to real world situations via story problems, projects, and group work, we aim to foster their sense of curiosity. We aim to teach math as it is exists in everyday life and beyond.

Elementary School

Students will explore mathematics through manipulatives, visuals, and texts. Students will also be exposed to more advanced concepts such as fractions, probability, measurement, and time. A strong emphasis is also placed on recognizing math vocabulary and using a variety of strategies to solve real life problems as we explore the essential question of “How do we use math everyday?”

Middle School

The Middle School Mathematics program reinforces and extends students’ arithmetic, geometric, algebraic, and number theory skills. While computations are seen as a part of mathematical study, TCIS Middle School math students also acquire, refine, and apply numerous problem-solving strategies to a variety of “textbook,” classical, and real-world problems. Technology and manipulatives are regularly used. Strong communication skills are stressed throughout Middle School math courses, and a number of investigations and reports add to students’ command of their mathematical abilities. Reports emphasize clear organization and communication of information, and include learning and using various reporting methods.
