The International Schools Chinese Language Education (ISCLE) Conference aims to provide a platform for dialogue and exchange on research and practice in Chinese language education within international contexts. Each year, it brings together educators, researchers, and subject experts to share effective teaching models and academic insights.

ISCLE addresses the challenges and opportunities in teaching and learning Chinese as a first, heritage (1.5), second, or additional language across diverse educational settings, including international schools, schools for expatriate children, and bilingual schools.

Established in 2013 by the Graduate Institute of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Kaohsiung Normal University, ISCLE has since been hosted by a growing network of institutions worldwide. A hallmark of the conference is its co-hosting model, with each edition jointly organized by a university and a school.

Past organizing and hosting institutions include: the inaugural founding host National Kaohsiung Normal University and I-Shou International School, The University of Hong Kong and The ISF Academy, I-Shou University, East China Normal University and United World College (UWC) Changshu China, Nanyang Technological University (NIE) and Canadian International School (CIS) Singapore, The University of Melbourne and Wesley College, National Taiwan Normal University and Kang Chiao International School, East China Normal University, The University of Hong Kong and Yew Chung International School (YCIS), City University of Macau and Kao Yip Middle School, ISA International Education Group and East China Normal University.

Abstract

Literature education plays a vital role in children’s development by extending their personal experiences and imagination while fostering language, literacy, and critical thinking. In response to the demands of 21st-century multiliteracies, Language Arts curriculum authorities around the world have advocated the teaching and learning of literary texts in multiple forms, including picture books, graphic novels, and films, alongside traditional written literature.

Filmic adaptations of literary works, which are increasingly widespread, provide a valuable teaching resource because their multimodal meaning-making potential can engage students in ways that written texts alone may not. By incorporating filmic adaptations into the Language Arts curriculum, teachers can help students visualise literary concepts more concretely while simultaneously developing their language, multimodal, and traditional literacy. In this way, filmic adaptations of written literature offer opportunities to achieve multiple learning objectives within a single teaching resource.

This presentation demonstrates how teachers can guide students to examine the construction of meaning and literary concepts through semiotic resources beyond language, including facial expression, gesture, body positioning, and proximity. Explicitly showing students how meanings are constructed in films through non-verbal resources can help them become more observant and creative writers.

Abstract

Many years ago, in her full-length children’s novel 《星星的約定》 (The Promise of the Stars), Chau Mat Mat portrayed a group of Hong Kong secondary school students who formed the “Beyond the Sky” Space Research Study Group. From studying astronomy and designing rockets to simulating space experiments, they pursued their own stars and dreams through repeated exploration and practice. After the novel was published, imagination on the page gradually began to resonate in the real world: some students began exploring astronomy and physics after reading it, some schools formed aerospace research clubs, and aerospace and technology education has flourished across Hong Kong schools in recent years. Stars once written on paper are now moving step by step toward the real sky.

Beginning with the creative journey behind 《星星的約定》, this keynote will explore how a literary work can grow from imagination and create ripples among readers, in schools, and in the wider world. It will further examine the connections among literature, reading, creative writing, education, and young people’s dreams. When literature opens the door to an imaginative world for children, education can provide fertile ground for curiosity and a spirit of exploration. What ultimately enables dreams to move from the page into reality is sustained learning, action, collaboration, and perseverance.

As reality begins to catch up with—and even surpass—the writer’s imagination, we are invited to reconsider the meaning of literature and education. Can reading become a seed that changes a life? How can creative writing help young people see possibilities that have yet to emerge? How can education protect children’s curiosity and accompany them as they transform imagination into action?

From stars on the page to stars in the sky, this is not only a story about literature and space exploration, but also a conversation about how dreams are seen, believed in, and ultimately realised. The true value of education lies not only in giving children answers, but also in encouraging them to look up at the stars, explore the unknown, and believe in their ability to journey farther.
