Science Department

The goal of the Science program at TCIS is to develop creative, inquisitive, technologically adept learners with the skills to ask and answer questions. We believe that scientific learning should be hands-on and applicable to real life. Through exploration students learn to think scientifically and are being prepared for the science of the future.

Elementary School - Through out the year, we will explore topics in life and physical science. Students will explore the world around them by asking questions and performing experiments. Students will be responsible for researching, writing about, and presenting on specified topics in science. Students will also take field trips to enhance their scientific understanding of the worlds they live in.

Middle School - The Middle School Science program at the Thai-Chinese International School is based on experiential science exploration. A primarily hands-on, engaging approach to science is used throughout the program to develop scientific skills and reinforce concepts. It is the goal of TCIS to have students employ a variety of science activities that will not only help them to prepare for the rigors of higher level science courses, but also to build in them a lifelong interest in science exploration. Through this process of participation in science activities, middle school science students learn how to conduct scientific inquiry and to examine ideas and topics using the scientific method. Students learn how to make scientific observations, to record data, to conduct research, to take notes, to perform experiments, to work safely in a laboratory, use common laboratory equipment, utilize graphs, understand units of measure and work as an effective team member. Rather than covering a vast range of textbook topics and encouraging memorization, Middle School science students learn to think critically about their world, to examine new ideas, and to communicate about their discoveries effectively.

High School - The goal of the Science department at TCIS is to develop creative, inquisitive, technologically adept learners with the skills to ask and answer questions. We believe that scientific learning should be hands-on and applicable to real life. Through extensive use of laboratory experiments, projects, portfolios, computer probes and the Internet, students are being prepared for the science of the future.
